Activated & Reactivated Carbon

Types of Activated Carbon We Supply

Hasten Chemical supplies multiple forms of activated carbon to match the specific requirements of each application:

Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) — Used in fixed-bed adsorption systems for water treatment, air purification, and industrial process applications. GAC provides high surface area per unit volume and can be regenerated and reused multiple times before replacement.

Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC) — Fine-mesh carbon used in batch treatment applications, wastewater treatment, and as an additive in mercury capture systems at power plants. PAC provides rapid adsorption due to its high surface-to-volume ratio and is typically used on a single-pass basis.

Reactivated Carbon — Previously used GAC that has been thermally reactivated to restore its adsorption capacity. Reactivated carbon provides 80-95% of the performance of virgin carbon at a significantly lower cost, making it an economical choice for applications where the highest virgin-grade performance is not required.

Specialty and Impregnated Carbons — Carbon products treated with specific chemicals (silver, sulfur, phosphoric acid, potassium hydroxide) to enhance their effectiveness for targeted contaminant removal, including hydrogen sulfide, mercury, and specific volatile organic compounds.

Industrial Applications

  • Water treatment — Municipal and industrial water purification, groundwater remediation, wastewater polishing, and drinking water taste and odor control
  • Air and gas purification — Removal of VOCs, hydrogen sulfide, mercury, and other contaminants from industrial exhaust streams, biogas, and ambient air
  • Oil and gas — Amine system purification, produced water treatment, and glycol dehydration unit carbon beds
  • Chemical processing — Decolorization, catalyst recovery, and purification of chemical process streams
  • Food and beverage — Decolorization of sugar, purification of edible oils, and water treatment for food processing facilities
  • Mining — Gold recovery by carbon-in-pulp (CIP) and carbon-in-leach (CIL) processes
  • Environmental remediation — Soil vapor extraction, groundwater pump-and-treat systems, and landfill gas treatment

Sourcing and Quality Assurance

We source activated and reactivated carbon from established manufacturers across North America, maintaining quality through:

  • Certificate of analysis with every shipment (iodine number, moisture content, mesh size distribution, apparent density)
  • Vendor qualification and ongoing quality monitoring
  • Consistent supply from multiple qualified sources to ensure availability
  • Technical support for carbon selection, system design, and performance optimization

For operations using reactivated carbon, we coordinate the full carbon management cycle: supply of fresh or reactivated carbon, spent carbon collection, and thermal reactivation through our processing partners.

Activated Carbon

Hasten Chemical has long been an established name in the activated and reactivated carbon supply. We have etched our name as one of the leading suppliers in the industry by providing top-quality, high-grade and cost-effective activated carbon. Activated carbon is popular for its filtration properties used in treating drinking water, aquatic water and waste water among others. Activated carbon is also useful in metal industries, medical and chemistry applications, environmental and agricultural uses and gas and chemical storages.

What is activated carbon?

Activated carbon is a form of carbon processed to increase its available surface area for adsorption or chemical reactions. It is produced from carbon-based material sources like coal, coconuts, nutshells, wood and lignite. These carbonaceous materials are processed to be activated carbon through physical or chemical activation.

What are activated carbon’s applications?

Activated carbons are generally used to purify liquids and gases. Water treatment, food and beverage processing, gas purification, decaffeination, gold purification, metal extraction, sewage treatment, and air filtration are among its many applications. In medicine, it is used to treat diarrhea, indigestion, poisoning and overdose following oral ingestions. It is also used as air filter in gas mask and respirators.
In livestock production, it is used as disinfectant, pesticide and processing aid. Vodka and whiskey are also filtered using activated carbons to improve quality by remove impurities which affects the alcoholic beverages’ color, taste and odor. Organic wines also use activated carbon to absorb brown pigments from white grape concentrates.

How are activated carbons classified?

Activated carbons are classified based on their size, preparation methods and applications. Powder activated carbon (PAC) are made in powder form with its granules being less than 1.0mm in size and average diameter of 0.15 to 0.25mm. It is generally used to adsorb natural organic compounds in water treatment applications. Granular activated carbon (GAC), relatively larger in size with a diameter between 1.2 to 1.6mm. GACs are suitable for gas and vapor adsorption and are commonly used in water filtration and chemical purification.
Extruded activated carbon (EAC) is a combination of powdered activated carbon and a binder, which are fused together and extruded into a cylindrical shaped activated carbon. Typically known as carbon block, these are mainly used for gas phase applications like automotive emission control. Bead activated carbon (BAC) is a highly spherical activate carbon with petroleum pitch preferred for liquidized bed applications such as plant exhaust gas and waste water recovery, clean room air and chemical filters and for polysilicon production process.

Why Hasten Chemical’s activated carbon?

Activated carbons differ because of the starting material and manufacturing methods. Certain pretreatment steps along with the base raw material establish the general characteristic that will exist in the finished product. These properties will classify the carbons and determine suited applications. Density, hardness, pore diameters, iodine numbers, and ash content are some of the considerations to be defined to allow specific activated carbon applications.
Hasten Chemical offers its expertise in providing relevant product information to help you determine the most suitable product for your specific need. By supplying top-quality and cost-effective activated and reactivated carbon, we ensure that the best possible choice is made for your application. Hasten Chemical meets the highest standards to deliver effective solution to your activated carbon needs.
